As we went down for a bath
in the dark, murky waters
at the ghat, where the canal
joined the river,
Do you remember seeing
two mates on the shore
sitting under a coconut tree
busy building a boat?
There, the cascading waters’
frothing speed …. here,
the shadow of canal shutter
on gloomy water ….
In that we dipped, doused,
dried and left, beholding
a trunk becoming boat
beneath the coconut tree.
While leaving, from the bus
on the bridge, we saw afar,
down in river, the sight of two souls
rowing away in a boat.
A serenity before
union with sea
surrounds it,
profound and vast.
On that expanse, swaying
in the gentle wind,
can that boat be this boat
taking shape here?

മൂലകവിത
ആ തോണിയാകുമോ?
– പി രാമന്
ഇരുണ്ടു കലങ്ങിയ
പുഴയില് കനാല് വന്നു
കൂടുന്ന കടവില് നാ-
മിറങ്ങിക്കുളിച്ചപ്പോള്
തീരത്തു തെങ്ങിന്ചോട്ടില്
രണ്ടുപേരിരുന്നൊരു
തോണി തീര്ത്തിരുന്നതു-
ണ്ടോര്മ്മയില്, ശരിയാണോ?
അപ്പുറം വെള്ളക്കുത്തിന്
പതയ്ക്കും വേഗം, കനാല്
ഷട്ടറിന് നിഴല് വീണ
വെള്ളത്തിന്നിരുളിങ്ങ്,
അതില് നാം മുങ്ങിത്തോര്ത്തി
കേറിപ്പോയ്, തെങ്ങിന് ചോട്ടില്
മരമൊന്നൊരു മുഴു-
ത്തോണിയാവതും നോക്കി.
പാലത്തില് ബസ്സില്പ്പോകെ,-
ത്താഴെ വെള്ളത്തില് കണ്ടൂ
രണ്ടുപേരൊരു തോണി
തുഴഞ്ഞു നീങ്ങും ദൃശ്യം
കടലില് ചേരുന്നതിന്
മുമ്പത്തെ പ്രശാന്തത
കനത്തു പരപ്പനെ-
ക്കിടപ്പുണ്ടതിന് ചുറ്റും
ആ പരപ്പിന്മേലിളം
കാറ്റൊന്നു തലോടുമ്പോ-
ളത്തോണിയാമോ പണി
മുഴുമിയ്ക്കുമിത്തോണി?
